Portage Glacier

After spending the morning in Anchorage, we headed South to Seward, AK. On the trip to Seward, we passed near Portage Glacier and decided to stop by for a hike. When we got out at Portage Glacier, it was about 50 degrees and pouring down rain! Thankfully we were prepared with our rain gear. It turns out you actually cannot see Portage Glacier anymore from the visitors center and it is only viewable from a glacier cruise. We hiked to check out Bryan Glacier instead.

Now this whole time hiking, I am VERY nervous we are going to come across a bear. I read all about bear etiquette and I was as prepared as I could be without spending $50 (the bear spray is $50, AJ refused to let me purchase it). The bear rules are just to be loud and make your presence known. The bears don’t want to be around you, as much as you don’t want to be around them. So I talked VERY loudly and we did not cross paths (while hiking) with any bears during our trip.

Below are some photos from Bryan Glacier. We would have been able to hike onto the glacier if we had the proper equipment, steel spike strap-ons, for our shoes.
