Gatlinburg, TN | 3.19.11

My best friend Annie's boss has a cabin in the mountains in Gatlinburg, TN. Awhile back Annie asked AJ and I and a couple of our other friends if they wanted to go on a weekend getaway to the cabin. It was going to cost us practically nothing to stay in the cabin and it was only about a 4.5 hour drive. AJ and I immediately said yes. Neither of us had ever been to Gatlinburg before and we were very excited!

All of the other people going (My best friends Annie and Bekah and their boyfriends, well Bekah's fiance now!!) were able to take Friday off of work and had left earlier in the morning to get to TN. AJ was able to get out of the office around 3. I met him down at Ft. Knox and we took my car to TN. There is no real direct route from Ft. Knox to Gatlinburg. Kentucky really only has 1 freeway that runs east to west across the state, really they have a lack of freeways. I guess people don't need to visit the hollers down south...

What we should have done was drive back up to Louisville and take the normal interstate, but AJ had mapped a little way to go on back roads and parkways, past Lake Cumberland and through some forrest. Everything was fine until south of Lake Cumberland AJ hit a gigantic rock and blew out the front passenger side tire. Luckily there was enough room to change the tire where we pulled over and since I have low profile tires, he has changed my tire a number of times. In fact so many times he was able to do it in 11 minutes (I timed him)! Within this 11 minutes 2 carloads of very scary hillbillies stopped offering help. We probably looked like yuppies stuck in the holler trying to not get dirty changing a tire. I was wear a little red shirt and designer jeans and AJ of course had on baby blue shorts and a nice white polo, but I assured them we needed no help. I was completely paranoid they were the inbreds from the movie Wrong Turn (yes I am aware that wrong turn was in WV, but really what is the difference??), I figured they would drug us and torture us. Finally I shewed them away and a cop came rolling up to help, but we were done at that point.

We made the rest of the trek to Gatlinburg on my full size spare, arriving around 9 pm and in desperate need of some wine! FYI: The ride from Inerstate 40 down to Gatlinburg was hell, keep that in mind if you ever plan to visit. It is seriously like the busiest weekend in Myrtle Beach without the beach.

The cabin was so nice and was really perched on the side of a mountain, absolutly gorgeous. The next morning UK was playing in the tournament, after a win, we were off to find a tire for the car. We finally found one at the Wal Mart which was all the way back up near Interstate 40. It took us about an hour to get to the Wal Mart. Once at the Wal Mart, we were told it was going to be a 2 hour wait until they could put our new tire one, I was so pissed. We had to hang out in a Wal Mart for 2 freaking hours. There was nothing in walking distance to check out. It turned out only to be one hour and we were on our way back to the cabin!

Saturday night we went out to dinner at some little mexican restaurant and then out to the best bar of all time, Hogs and Honeys! Annie's boss owns the joint so it was a must see in Gatlinburg. Once again, we were the preppy yuppies barely fitting in at the biker bar! They had an ass shaking contest and all these old. fat women were on the bar dancing. The woman who won was chatting with us afterward about how proud her 14 year old daughter was going to be that she had won the contest. She had some major competition also, I'm talking some of those ladies had some real deal stripper moves! Bekah, Annie and I were like OMG, pure class! Since Annie and Ryan's boss owned the place, we were set up with a VIP table...lol!

Below are some group shots of us @ Hogs and Honeys! I am really unsure why there are a bunch of Big 10 collegiate flags behind us since we were way down in SEC Country!

We headed home on Sunday and decided to take the freeway the whole way, much faster. No more little side trips for us for awhile, since AJ's ominous black cloud follows us wherever we may go ;)
